The Florida Gators suffered their 2nd straight blowout loss last week at the hands of LSU by a score of 41-11. It was the 2nd straight week the Gators had lost by 28 points or more after suffering another big loss to Alabama the week before ultimately marking the first time in 3 decades Florida suffered two straight losses by more than 24 points. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times, or maybe both losses show just how far the SEC West powers have come along. This week the Gators battle another SEC West power by way of the 24th ranked Auburn Tigers inside Jordan Hare Stadium.

The Auburn Tigers are not near the power they were a year ago when they won the National Championship. However, the young team is not near as bad as some people believed they would be in 2011. The Tigers upset a top ten South Carolina team two weeks ago and have two wins against top 16 opponents on the season. Last week the Tigers, defense long to be the weakness of the team, failed to find a way to stop an explosive Arkansas offense in a 38-14 loss on the road. It was the 2nd loss for the Tigers this season. This week the Tigers return home to Jordan Hare in a rebound situation. The Tigers have won 11 straight games at home and they will put that streak on the line this week against the visiting Gators.

For Florida, they still believe they can contend for the SEC East and they are not out of the picture despite two early conference losses. However, the Gators must find a way to get things going on the offensive side of the football. The Gators scored just 21 points combined in their two losses to LSU and Alabama. Additionally, starting QB John Brantley missed last week with an ankle injury and his status for this week is still uncertain. Freshman Jacoby Brissett received the nod last week against LSU but struggled completing 8 of 14 passing for 1 score and 2 picks. The good news is that Florida does not have to post huge numbers throwing the football. Fortunately, Florida can be successful as long as they can get moving on the ground despite whoever plays the quarterback role.

The problem over the last few weeks is that the Gators have battled two of the toughest rushing defenses in the country and failed to establish the run. This week Florida will attempt to get running backs Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey the ball more often. Rainey currently leads the team with 467 yards. However, Demps is the true homerun threat averaging over 8 yards per carry and a team-high 4 touchdowns. Fortunately for Florida, the Auburn defense has been horrific against the run allowing 201 yards per game on the ground. Therefore, Florida will attempt to get back to what they do best and that is attacking on the ground.

For Auburn, defense has to be the major area of concern. The Tigers rank a miserable 105th in total defense giving up 439 yards per game. Additionally, the Tigers have relinquished nearly 30 points on average as well. The challenge this week will be getting to the Florida tailbacks quickly and bringing them down before they get into the open field. The bottom line is that the Tigers must play solid against the run this weekend if they are going to keep their unbeaten home streak alive.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Tigers like to move the ball on the ground as well. The Auburn passing has been nearly non-existent and QB Barrett Trotter has struggled heavily. However, the Tigers have one of the best tailbacks in the SEC in Michael Dyer. Dyer has been explosive this season racking up 679 yards with 8 touchdowns while averaging near 6 yards per carry. Also, backup Onterrio McCalebb has added 221 yards while averaging over 5 yards per carry off the bench. Expect both guys to be a focus for the offensive attack this Saturday against the Gators. The key will be if the Auburn offense can run the ball consistently and sustain long drives to allow their defense to rest. If they can do that, they will have a good chance of scoring the victory.

Spread

Jay’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Both teams are in a rebound situation and I believe this will be a hard fought game on both sides. However, I believe the Gators will put out the win. Take Florida -2.

Additional College Football Betting Previews

A jam-packed Saturday afternoon slate for Week 6 of the NCAAF regular season features a number of stellar matchups for us to dig into. One of the top games of the day will see a pair of Top 10 SEC teams square off down in Gainesville.

The Auburn Tigers will bring their undefeated record on the road to take on the Florida Gators, another powerhouse club without a blemish on their 2019 resume. In the latest AP Top 25 poll, Auburn was ranked 7th, while Florida checked in at 10th.

The Tigers have already passed several tests this season with flying colors. Two of their five wins have come over ranked teams. The Gators haven’t had anywhere near as tough a schedule as of yet, but that changes in the coming weeks as conference play heats up.

This game is one of several which are going to have a big impact on next week’s Top 10 rankings. Let’s take a look at the matchup in full detail, starting with the way the oddsmakers see it.

Auburn vs. Florida Pick:

On Saturday night, Auburn welcomed Mississippi State to town as 7.5-point favorites. They dominated the game from the outset and held a 42-9 lead at the half. The second half was a bit quieter, but the Tigers had little trouble cruising to a 56-23 win. Bo Nix delivered a stellar performance for the winning side, throwing for 335 yards and two scores.

Florida was home over the weekend for what amounted to little more than a tune-up game versus Towson. The Gators cruised to a 38-0 victory, holding their opponents to 248 total yards of offense. The defense forced three turnovers and racked up four sacks and eight tackles for loss in the glorified scrimmage. Kyle Trask tossed for 188 yards and accounted for three total scores in the rout.

As mentioned, the Tigers hold a pair of wins over Top 25 teams already. Back in Week 1, they squared off with Oregon at AT&T Stadium as 3.5-point favorites. They trailed for much of the game but rallied for a 27-21 win. Two weeks ago, they paid a visit to Texas A&M as 4-point underdogs. After racing out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, they went on to secure a 28-20 victory.

The Gators have three huge wins under their belts, but they were tested in their other two contests. In the opener, they were 7-point favorites over Miami, but they really had to work for a 24-20 win in a defensive-minded affair. A few weeks later, they traveled to Kentucky as 9.5-favorites. They were down big heading into the final quarter, but got it together and rallied for a 29-21 win.

Through five games, Florida has the stronger passing attack, while Auburn wins the battle on the ground. Both defenses have been solid overall, but the edge goes to Florida. That said, three of their victories came over lesser foes in which they allowed a total of three points. The Gators have the pass rushing edge, while the Tigers negative turnover margin could come back to bite them before too long.

Nix hasn’t been shooting the lights out, but he’s still doing a solid job for an undefeated team. He has completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 980 yards, seven scores, and two picks. He has also added on 173 yards and two TDs on the ground. JaTarvious Whitlow leads the backfield at 92/463/7. Seth Williams paces the pass catchers with four scores, while Jeremiah Dinson leads with 34 tackles.

Trask was handed the keys to the offense after Feleipe Franks went down to injury. He has a 77.3 completion percentage for 647 yards, five scores, and two picks, and has also added on two rushing TDs. Lamical Perine is the leading rusher at 55/197/3, while Van Jefferson tops the wideouts at 18/248/1. David Reese II leads the team with 36 tackles, while Jonathan Greenard is tops with four sacks.

The Verdict

Meetings of undefeated Top 10 conference foes don’t happen everyday, so we should be in for a treat. Auburn didn’t enter the 2019 campaign with a ton of expectations surrounding the program, but they have overachieved and then some. Florida was being viewed as the best team in the SEC East not named Georgia, and that still holds true.

Florida Gators Vs Auburn Point Spread

The Tigers are 3-point road favorites for this one, and that’s a testament to how well they’ve been playing. The neutral-site stunner was one thing, but walking into Kyle Field as underdogs and walking out victorious is another. The Gators have done their job versus those on the schedule, but they have yet to face a team at their level.

They will on Saturday. Auburn leaves Gainesville with a win and cover to keep its undefeated run rolling.
